E-session with Erica and Santos

Thursday afternoon, I had the distinct pleasure of meeting with Erica and Santos for their photo shoot at one of my absolute favorite places in Buenos Aires: Jardín Botánico Carlos Thays in Palermo. We wandered around the garden for a couple of hours as the two love-birds enjoyed the surroundings and each other. Their playful spirit and their love for each other made it simple to capture in the photographs.  I look forward to shooting their wedding in February – it should be a blast!

The Tipa trees of Buenos Aires

I have just received wonderful news that the Athena Educational Trust will be funding my photography show “Tipas Porteñas” at the Buenos Aires Botanical Gardens. The show will open on November 21 and run through December 11. Spring will have sprung in all her glory and the Tipa trees will have small yellow blossoms dotting the branches. In conjunction with the show, I will be working with Ambientate Argentina and neighborhood environmental gropus to plant trees on the streets of Buenos Aires around Arbol Day (September 21st), continuing the legacy Sr. Carlos Thays started over one hundred years ago. This project has bloomed more that I could ever have hoped for and I look forward to producing these events.

Matador Photo Contest: The Story in the Picture

My good friend Kate Sedgwick posted a couple of weeks ago about a photography contest on Matador Networks and on a whim I entered. I enter photography contests, but don’t ever hope to win. It is much like submitting written articles, you have to send a lot out there before things begin to stick – build up your rejection file and your thick skin.

Much to my surprise, today I learned that my photo had been chosen for first place! I’m pretty pleased and honored. The entry was a photo that I took at the Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires in 2007 of German tourists photographing the famous feral cats that roam and guard the cemetery. I took it with my point and shoot Minolta, which just proves the point (once again) that the best camera that a photographer can have is the one they have with them at the point they take the photo.

Tigre Delta in the New York Times

Two weeks ago, I was asked by the New York Times to cover a photo shoot about Tigre, a town about an hour north of Buenos Aires. I jumped at the chance and spent the weekend covering a range of subjects and meeting some very interesting people. The article was written by Michael Luongo, who I look forward to catching up with upon my return from the states later in December. This was my first commission from them and I hope more will follow (but my second time being published in the paper).

The People of Argentina – History in the Present

As part of Festival de la Luz, I have the honor of exhibiting at Galeria EdeA in San Telmo. This year’s theme is immigration. My photos portray the history of the Argentine people as represented by the present generations. Argentina is famous for its immigrants and yet the land was populated by Indigenous Peoples for thousands of years before their arrival. The photos are a selection of images from the Immigration Museum at Retiro, an Immigrants Festival in Rosario, and the march of “Pueblos Originarios” during the Bicentennial Celebrations. These photos were taken on assignment for The Argentina Independent and printed on canvas by Ariel Aguilar.

The opening is tonight from 19:30 – 21:30. I hope you can join me. If you cannot make the opening, I hope you will stop by to take a look. The show will last until August 10.

starting this site

I have been playing around with getting this site up and running for the past four hours and have some photos published.  I really like this theme from Tim Sainburg, but it needs a bit of tweaking – mostly on my end.
