A friend’s son recently turned two and the family organized a friends and family outing to DierenPark Amersfoort. I immediately knew I would want to take photographs of the day. And as we had never been, I expected our son would love the new experience. It was a great day. Unfortunately, we did not luck out with the weather – there was a huge rainstorm early on in the outing, but hey, it’s the Netherlands. And as they say, there isn’t bad weather, just bad clothing. And we did not come prepared. We did finally buy our son the child-sized umbrella he’s been wanting for ages and he was super happy jumping in puddles. I didn’t bring his boots so there was a bit of a #mommyfail but it all worked out in the end.

Despite the downpour, we all had a wonderful time and we can highly recommend it to families and people wanting a good outdoor activity. Below is a selection of the photographs taken that day. Hope you enjoy them as much as we enjoyed the outing and as much as I enjoyed shooting these photographs.

Fashion for Good

The fashion industry is undergoing a revolution for good. Researchers are investigating and inventing new raw materials. The complete cycle of clothes production is being rethought from “Cradle to Cradle”, with all the elements being taken into consideration: Materials, Water, Energy, Economy and Lives. Fashion for Good has established partnerships with various designers to shine a light on ways the fashion industry can be more sustainable for the producers, the designers, the workers, and consumers.

The main room downstairs in the Fashion for Good Museum displays a collection of sustainable clothes.

October 10th, 2019 Fashion for Good hosted an event at their museum in Amsterdam to show off the latest collection by Tess van Zalinge, and the work by Silfir. Van Zalinge’s collection “Fifteen” was “Sparked from a dissatisfaction with the way the wedding industry currently operates, I felt the need to create awareness in this market, where the focus is on beauty for ‘one-day-only’.”

Tess’ signature is clearly present in this collection: body-conscious silhouettes, layering and the use of various crafts such as patchwork, laser cutting, folding and embroidery. Inspired by fifteen wedding traditions every look is an ode to one of these forgotten traditions; pearls, bianca jagger, underwear, queen victoria, blue, cake, white, black, veils, herbs & grains, costume wear, getaway suit, intimates, tulips and upcycling. She takes fashionable heritage as a starting point to tell the story of symbolism, emotion and authenticity behind a marriage.

Hannah Kromminga travelled by train from Berlin to attend the event showcasing Silfir’s extensive work, specifically the Soft Workwear Uniform. This company spent years researching what people wear, to then create a limited selection of long-lasting garments that people can interchange to have a complete and diverse wardrobe. They have implemented changes in every step of the production process: Raw Material Production, Production and Processing of Fibers, Transportation and Retailing, Use, Re-Use, Repair and Recycle. The whole process is called the “Silfir Circularity Concept.”

Shoes by WAO are on display at Fashion for Good Museum. WAO shoes are made from natural materials and dyed using vegetal pigments. Old shoes can be returned to be separated into different parts and ground up into compost.

Fashion for Good is thoughtful about every decision they make. When creating this Experience, they thoroughly assessed everything against their sustainability criteria. The clothes hangers are made from cardboard.

Visiting Kasteel de Haar

I recently organized a photography tour of Kasteel de Haar (De Haar Castle) with a group of photographers based in Utrecht. We went on a gorgeous fall day; we really lucked out with the weather. This amazingly beautiful castle was restored in the late 1800s by the architect Pierre Cuypers who also built Amsterdam Central Station and the Rijksmuseum. It is located just outside of Utrecht, and accessible by car, bike and public transport. We met up and took the bus out to the countryside admiring the cows, sheep and birds enjoying the fields. Below is a selection of the photos taken that day.

Visiting Keukenhof

This past weekend, our family took a trip to the famous gardens of Keukenhof. Coming from Utrecht, we took the train to Amsterdam and then the ferry across the channel to “This is Holland” where we had bought excursion tickets including a boat tour of the nearby lakes and windmills used to pump the water and keep the land dry. The canal boat ride in the Kager lakes and around the surrounding islands provided a great view of local houses and the classic windmills the Netherlands is so known for.

The Jacarandas of Buenos Aires photo show lives on, and in a couple of different ways!!

First, Juan Pablo and Malena have finished the video of the opening at the Botanical Gardens and put together a lovely video from early November. I’m not one to judge as I’m a bit biased, but I think it’s absolutely wonderful! It sets the conditions for joy and energy of the day, full of art, flowers, children and friendship. The last week of the Jacaranda photo exhibition at the Botanical Gardens, I had the honor to be interviewed by the radio of the National Congressional Library of Argentina. I have put together a video from the interview with photos by myself and Ariel Kanterewicz (from the exhibition opening) with subtitles so that both English and Spanish speakers alike can enjoy the interview. As noted in this video, I have been asked by a new LGBT cultural center here in Argentina to host the show for a couple of weeks at the end of the year, so there will be another inauguration on December 22 (7-11 PM) at Feliza. Christmas Family Photos

I was contacted by the lovely D about shooting her, her Argentine husband and their lovely young daughter on their short visit in Buenos Aires. Luckily, our schedules meshed and we scheduled a shoot in the traditional neighborhood of San Telmo, to get that old-school feeling with the light and cobblestones. We spent a morning together and focused mainly on posed shots for their yearly Christmas cards. We worked so well together, that D suggested we have another shoot later on in the week to get more photojournalistic style coverage of them with their daughter enjoying Buenos Aires. It was a distinct pleasure to capture the love, joy, and beauty this family share. Please enjoy the slideshow below!

Maternity photoshoot under the Jacarandas

It’s wonderful when multiple loves come together in one experience. In this case, my love of trees, my love of photography, and of mothers-to-be. To date, I haven’t had that much experience with maternity photo shoots, but I know they are about capturing the love, the “glow”, and the beauty of this incredible moment in life, and honoring and conveying the incredible bond that mothers carrying their unborn children have during those nine precious months. L asked me specifically to include the blossoming jacarandas, so I jumped at the chance. Thank you for trusting me. Look forward to getting to know your bundle of joy next year.

Successful opening and a bit of press

The show had quite a successful opening on Saturday November 4th with some 50-60 people in attendance. The day was bright and cheerful, the crowd was interested and interesting and the photos all looked great hung up on the walls. I know that several friends have been during this past week as well and have all sent really positive feedback.

My friend Ariel K was on hand and took some lovely photos. I have linked to the album on FB and included some photos below. Juan Pablo and Malena were also on hand to take video of the opening and also the day before they took some of the mounting of the photos. When that is ready to show, I’ll send out another update.

Jacaranda Photography Exhibition

Through the generous sponsorship of friends, family, and fans via the wildly successful IndieGoGo campaign, more than enough funds were raised to mount the photo exhibition of my collection of photos of Jacarandas of Buenos Aires at the Jardín Botánico of Buenos Aires. With the sponsorship of the Marcelo Gurruchaga Espacio Fotográfico, the Jardín Botánico and the IndieGoGo campaign, this series of Jacaranda photos will be on exhibition during the month of November, when the Jacarandas themselves will be in bloom all throughout the city.

This is my second solo exhibition at the Jardín Botánico and it will run from November 4 until November 26, with an opening reception on Saturday, November 4 from 12-2pm. I hope readers can make it to the opening, and if not then, please stop by the gardens throughout the month and have a peak in the main brick building at the exhibition. The exhibit is open to the public on Tuesdays to Fridays from 8:00 to 18:45 and Saturdays and Sundays from 9:30 to 18:45.

Incredibly, the fundraising goal for the IndieGoGo campaign was met by over 200%. The extra funds will allow me to hire a videographer for the event, and publish a limited edition of my photo book “Seasons of Buenos Aires”, which shows the life cycle of the city’s trees through each season of the year. I plan to have the bilingual books available in Argentina by the end of the year, so stay tuned for more news!
